The debate on violence in the school environment and on forms of pacification has intensified in the country, especially after the attacks and threats that occurred earlier this year. To discuss about strategies implemented in Brazil and abroad to promote safety in schools, the International Seminar on Safety and Protection in the School Environment was held in Brasília on 30-31 May 2023. The event promoted by UNESCO in Brazil, the Ministry of Education (MEC), and the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), highlighted successful initiatives to protect the school environment and fostered the debate on integrated public policies. The seminar was opened by the Ministers who are members of the Interministerial Working Group (GTI), established as a strategy for preventing and coping with violence in schools.

The seminar was part of the actions developed by the GTI, a group created by the Brazilian Federal Government. It gathered public managers, education professionals, national and international researchers, the Public Ministry, and the educational community. The two-day event was broadcast live, and the lectures are now available on the MEC YouTube channel.

The Coordinator of the Education Sector at UNESCO in Brazil participated in the seminar as moderator of the panel "Strengthening the School Environment based on Human Rights and Democratic Management". The panel occurred on the morning of 31 May. The debate brought together international specialists such as the Head of the Education Sector at the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), Kombou Boly Barry; the Professor at the Universidad de los Andes, in Colombia, a specialist in education for coexistence, Enrique Chaux; and the Professor-Researcher at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences in Mexico (FLACSO Mexico), Ursula Zurita.
