St. Louis Unites for the Annual Take Steps Walk in Support of Crohn's & Colitis Foundation

Jun 08, 2023

Take Steps for Crohn's and Colitis Youth Honoree, seven-year-old Eloise who lives with ulcerative colitis.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

St. Louis, May 25, 2023 - On Sunday, June 10th, 2023, the residents of St. Louis will gather at Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park for the annual Take Steps walk, organized by the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. This event aims to raise funds for crucial research and patient programs dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Living with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis can be an incredibly challenging and isolating journey. The Take Steps walk provides a supportive and uplifting atmosphere that brings communities together, reminding patients that they are not alone in their fight against IBD.

In the United States, millions of children and adults are impacted by the daily struggles of Crohn's or colitis. This year, we proudly honor seven-year-old Eloise as our Youth Honoree. Eloise was diagnosed with colitis in the fall of 2019 and has endured numerous medications, including biologics, immunosuppressants, steroids, and antibiotics. While some of these treatments temporarily relieved her symptoms of pain, fatigue, and bleeding, the symptoms would inevitably resurface. Eloise's journey has been filled with countless hours of excruciating pain, leading her to desperately plead "to make it stop."

This past winter, Eloise's health took a severe turn when she experienced a perforated colon and required immediate hospitalization. In a life-saving decision, her family opted for ostomy surgery, a procedure that creates an opening (stoma) from the inside of the body to the outside. A pouch attached to the abdomen collects waste, allowing Eloise to eat without pain and regain some semblance of a normal life. Though the adjustment to living with an ostomy has been challenging, Eloise is now able to enjoy life and embrace moments of happiness.

The St. Louis Take Steps event, organized by the Midwest Chapter, has set a fundraising goal of $148,000, contributing to the overarching mission of finding cures for Crohn's and ulcerative. The event promises a delightful experience for the whole family, featuring activities such as pancake breakfast, balloon twisting, face painting, games, music, a photo booth, and the Teddy Bear Mobile.

Join us on June 10th at Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park to make a difference in the lives of those battling Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Together, we can create a future where these debilitating conditions no longer stand in the way of leading fulfilling lives.
